Development: Just another word for training?
22nd July 2008

Too often when organisations discuss development they assume that a training course will meet employees' and organisations' development needs.

In our experience development isn't just another word for training.

  • Training is about giving somebody the skills they need in order to complete a task.

  • Development is about changing people so that they get the most out of themselves and increase their contribution and value to the organisation.

Sometimes, when planning development programmes, it's difficult to know where to start and which approach to take -  that's why Platinum have put together their new course "Introducing an Employee Development Programme - Designing the Future".

At Platinum, we believe that in order to add real value to organisations and employees - you need to ensure that the managers (people responsible for the development programme) are fully equipped with an understanding of the principles of supporting self development and have been enabled to develop their own skills within this area.  It is no exaggeration to say that supporting self development is the single most important function that a manager has.
